The Black Sea is known by the shipping industry, even from history, that present many issues area for sailing. Thus, in the Black Sea basin, serious naval accidents take place periodically. An important influence on these serious naval accidents is the sea state conditions acting on the ships and the action of the wind. Thus, for a series of accidents identified in time and space, the wind characteristics were analysed, while the sea state conditions were simulated. Based on the information regarding the wind and wave conditions, the evolution in time of the wind speed at the height of 10 meters above the sea level and the significant wave height can be follow. It will be simulated the state of the sea and wind speed for the day when the accidents occurred and for the day before. In order to simulate the sea state conditions, one of the state-of-the-art wave model based on the spectrum concept was used, namely Simulating WAves Nearshore (SWAN). The SWAN model was forced with the wind fields provided by the U.S. National Centers for Environmental Prediction, Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (NCEP-CFSR).
The objective of this study is to understand the development of the wave and wind conditions and how the extreme weather phenomena act on merchant ships. At the same time, the study evokes the way in which external parameters acted on various ships that ended up by shipwrecks in the geographical area of the Black Sea. External factors are considered to have played an important role in the causality and outcome of these tragic naval events. |
