|
Organic production is an overall system of farm management and food production that combines best environmental and climate action practices. Although various research studies estimate that the demand for organic products will increase in the world, farmers are reluctant to switch to this more environmentally friendly way of farming. In Latvia, organic farming developed rapidly after joining the EU in 2004 owing to the support policies implemented by the European Union (EU) and Latvia. In 2004, there were 1043 certified organic farms in Latvia, while in 2018 their number rose to 4172 or increased 4-fold, reaching 6% of the total number of farms. The utilised agricultural area under organic management has increased 6.3-fold during this period. In 2018 in terms of utilised agricultural area, organic farms were 2.4-fold larger in size than the average farm in Latvia. The aim of the research is to examine trends in organic crop farming in Latvia in the period 2005-2018 and make a projection of the organic area for a period until 2050. Projecting the development of organic crop farming in Latvia by 2050 by means of the LASAM model allows identifying that the agricultural area under organic farming is expected to gradually increase to 380 thou. ha by 2050. The areas under organic cereals, oilseed crops and pulses are projected to increase particularly significantly ? by up to 71% by 2050 ? and so is the output of the crops.
