Organic production has become a highly specialized agricultural system, which requires specific professional education, knowledge and technologies. The global demand for organic products is projected to increase in the future. In Latvia, the output of organic agricultural products continues increasing, yet the current output as well as the growing processing and sales capacity is not able to meet the demand for organic products by consumers, which is expected to increase over the next years. Therefore, the aim of the present research is to examine trends in organic livestock farming and project the number of organic livestock in Latvia for a period until 2050.
The research concluded that by 2050, the number of organic livestock in Latvia is projected to increase for cattle, mostly meat and other cattle, while the number of dairy cows is expected to increase slightly. The number of sheep on organic farms is also projected to increase compared with 2018. The numbers of organic goats and poultry are likely to remain at the same level as in 2018, yet the number of organic pigs is projected to decrease significantly by 2023, stabilizing afterwards until 2050. |
