Fabrication of nanofibers is a field of research attracting a lot of interest from technologici scientists because of its great applications in many fields. In order to design the polymer drug delivery system, we had to select a polymer that is biocompatible, biodegradable, non-toxic and approved for medical use. One of the polymers that fulfill those requirements is poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA).
There have been various reports on the fabrication of PVA nanofibers with solvents as water, or water with different salts, water with boric acid or dimethylformamide. However, all chemicals used above are not preferred options for the design of drug-containing nanofiber systems. Solvents chosen for use in our systems are non-toxic, volatile, inexpensive, and minimizes residue of chemicals during and after electrospinning. Therefore, acetic acid and ethanol are the two co-solvents which have been investigated in this study.
We have investigated the PVA ratio, the effect of solvents including deionized water, acetic acid, ethanol and their mixture on the PVA nanofibers formation by electrospinning method. We have successfully fabricated PVA nanofibers with polymer content equal to 12%, CH3COOH 30%, the rest was deionized water. The sizes of these fibers were from 279 to 631 nm, the mean was 349 nm and the median was 343 nm. We found that an aqueous solution of acetic acid is very favorable for electrospun PVA fibers. Compared to the fabrication of nanofibers from aqueous PVA aqueous solution, the addition of acetic acid generally reduced the fiber diameter, and the fiber size distribution become more concentrated. However too high acid concentration inhibits fibers formation. Ethanol added to the solvent system was not favorable for the fabrication of nanofibers from PVA. Research on PVA nanofibers is the first step that provides data and basis for our future studies, that is to combine PVA with various biopolymers and then incorporate the drugs into the polymer matrix formed to serve the purpose of fabricating of drug nanofiber systems.
