Debris flows are considered as flows of highly liquefied sediments in mountain areas, usually triggered by intensive rainfall or snowmelt. They move rapidly through the transport channel or a gully and accumulate the debris material on a less slopping or flat areas, forming a debris fan. Often debris flows occur suddenly and could affect infrastructure as well as to influence human activity and life. This determines the growing need to deepen the research of the debris flows and to take into account the peculiarities of their occurrence in the strategies and plans for territorial development. In the current paper main morphometric parameters of debris flows area in the watershed of the river Byuyukdere (Southern Bulgaria) and characteristics of debris flow deposits are presented. Geomorphogical settings derived from the morphometric analyses and field research are considered as prerequisites for debris flows occurrence and propagation. Morphoscopic and grain-size analyzes are used to characterize the sediments and the conditions of their transport and accumulation. The calculated values of sorting coefficient of the deposits, in a range of 2.08 to 4.68, indicate the turbulent depositional environment and the flow dynamics.
