Taking into account the sedimentation features since the last 5 decades, considerable anthropic modifications on the Danube channel are present, as the debris composition varies concerning the proportion of terrigenous minerals, lithoclasts, bioclasts and organic matter. Since the 7th decade of the last century, marked by the construction of most hydrological power plants on the Danube, Olt, Jiu, Cerna and other major rivers, a significant change of the sedimentary volume brought downstream by the Danube is assumed. This study aims comparing new data obtained by in situ observations and laboratory analysis with older data describing volumes and sedimentary features last decades. Our evaluations regarding the superficial sediments sampled from the St. George cut-off channel and meanders reveal average percentages of 72.4% consisting of siliciclastic fraction (SIL), 17.5% belonging to total organic matter (TOM) and 10% carbonates (CAR). Therefore, the studied sediments were assigned to the mineral non-carbonate / low carbonate category, with low amount of shell and shell fragments and low carbonate minerals.
