In oil and gas exploration we need to consider all the geological components and how they come together to have source rock character, trap formation geometry, or reservoir quality. To understand these mechanisms we have to analyze the geological evolution dictated by tectonic uplift, landscape dynamics and drainage network evolution.
Paleogeography together with reconstructions of climate and sea level changes allows us to predict source and reservoir facies, which means a great advantage for exploration.
The West Black Sea Basin located in the extension of the North-Dobrogea Orogen and of the Moesian Platform in the offshore area of Romania has a complex structure and a very dynamic evolution. It hosts oil systems related to sedimentary sequences aged between the Cretaceous and Pliocene.
In this paper, we will analyze some of these elements, related to the evolution and stratigraphic aspects highlighted by seismic prospecting in the Pontian deposits, in the Histria Depression and adjacent areas of the Western Black Sea Basin.
