UNCERTAINTY ON SPARK IGNITION ASSESSMENT

In the paperwork are presented aspects regarding uncertainty involved in the process of spark ignition assessment for intrinsically safe equipment.
In the first part of the paper was presented the explosion risk. In the field of power generation and also, in a lot of other fields of industrial activities, the occurrence of flammable substances is a common fact. As a consequence, an explosion risk can occur. On the other hand, the installations placed in areas endangered by presence of flammable substances should be operational and therefore, powered. Those installations and equipment, in order to safely operate, should be assessed, tested and certified.
For the low current equipment and installations, the assessment involves a computational process which has as input the electrical parameters and also, ignition curves. Due to the logarithmic scale used for the ignition curves an amplified effect of input parameters uncertainty is expected.
An assessed item of equipment should meet the safety requirements. Regarding the hazard of ignition is needed that the computed safety coefficient to be at least 1 or 1.5 depending on the equipment category.
The theoretical stochastic model involved for this approach is described in the second part of the paper.
In the third part are presented the results of simulation and their analysis.
The main conclusion is that the uncertainty of input electrical parameters exhibits an asymmetric amplification effect on computed safety coefficients.
Another conclusion is that the uncertainty amplification coefficient is depending on the slope of the ignition curves used for the computation of safety coefficients.
