Carbon foam is advanced porous material with multiple high-technology applications, due to its structure, light weight, high thermal stability, high thermal and electrical conductivity. Potential applications of carbon foam are construction of ship and aerospace modules, rocket nozzles, radar adsorbing systems; fuel cells, battery electrodes, nuclear shields, rods for nuclear reactors; prosthetics, etc. In this work a new method for preparation of carbon foam is demonstated, using precursors mixtures of organic substances with appropriate properties and suitable chemical treatment, which leads to final product without using pressure and without stabilization stage. The appropriate thermo-oxidative modification at 200 oC with conc. H2SO4 or conc. HNO3 of mixtures of furfural and industrial coal tar pitch), and subsequent heating at 1000 oC in Ar atmosphere allow the formation of porous structure of the resulting carbon foam. Activated carbon foam sample was obtained from HNO3 treated sample after hydropyrolysis at 800oC. The properties of the synthesized carbon foam can be controlled by varying the composition of the starting mixture and the type of oxidant. The formation mechanism of the porous structure of carbon foams is considered. Carbon foam is characterized by X-ray analysis, scanning electron microscopy, elemental analysis, BET. The proposed new, less energy consuming synthesis method, allows to avoid the use of pressure and stabilization step, which enables the production of material with very good physico-chemical properties. Phenol uptake in aqueous solution by activated carbon foam is 150 mg g?1. Phenol adsorption results fits very good with the theoretical Langmuir adsorption isotherm.
