It is well known that more than 80% of globally traded goods are conveyed by maritime means of transportation. The shipping activities cannot be performed without emitting harmful gases and particles. The Black Sea basin has a consistent shipping activity accompanied by air emissions. The said basin also complicates the pollution with hydrocarbons or litter point of view, air emissions placing an additional burden on the Black Sea basin environment. We assessed the quantity of the main harmful components of the emissions based on the amount of cargo conveyed and port calls. The pollutants are produced mainly during the cruise, port-approaching maneuvers, and loading or unloading cargo, while hoteling is the least producing pollutants. We emphasized the adverse repercussion of shipping emissions on human health and climate change. The main provisions of international and European regulatory framework were also considered highlighting the obstacles in their implementation in a sea basin with six riparian states where just two of them being European Union members and must apply the union legislation and goals regarding reducing the emissions. The scoop underlines some state-of-the-art technical solutions along with an analysis of potential regulations adopted to reduce the harmful emissions along with the difficulties brought by their exertion.
