In 2019, a new, modern Strategy of the Environmental Policy of the Slovak Republic until 2030 (the Envirostrategy 2030) was approved. The previous one has been in force since 1993, so it was only a matter of time before implementing a strategy to address current environmental challenges and problems.
Along with industry and energy, transport is one of the main producers of greenhouse gas emissions. According to the statistics of the Ministry of the Environment of the Slovak Republic, the amount of greenhouse gas emissions decreased slightly year on year and, in the short term, shows a relatively stable development. According to Envirostrategy 2030, the following emission reductions are expected compared to 2005: SO2 by 82%, NOx by 50%, NMVOC by 32%, NH3 by 30%, and PM2.5 by 49%. The National Programme for the Reduction of Emissions will focus on effective emission reduction measures in all sectors, compliance with emission ceilings and emissions trading, increasing the share of low-emission transport, etc. By effectively applying existing and additional measures, the set goals can be achieved. To achieve climate neutrality, it is also necessary to make efforts to identify possible additional measures, specified in the valid strategic documents of the state and their updates.
The paper deals with the issue of the impact of transport on the production of greenhouse gas emissions in Slovakia, related basic national and European legislation, an overview of the development of pollutant emissions in Slovakia, and identified measures in the Envirostrategy 2030 and their implementation.
