The research was conducted to find out if lately found on market eco and bio friendly dishwashing products affect commonly known phytoremediation plants less than most poular chemical dishwashing products.
There was chosen one - most popular, and four dishwashing products that position themselves in market as extremely eco and bio friendly. Dishwashing products were made in 3 solutions – 1.0ml, 2.5ml and 5.0ml of product in 100ml of water.
Three species of known phytoremediation plants were taken – Sinapis sp., Secale sp. and Raphanus sp. 100 seeds of each for each different concentration of solution.
There was a control group of 100 seeds of each plant treated with tap water.
The research showed that in most popular and one of eco friendly dishwashing product seeds did not develop roots nor sprouts, whereas in three of the eco friendly products up to 20% of the seeds managed to develop roots. In none of the solutions seeds managed to develop sprouts in seven days period.
In the mean time the control group seeds developed up to 96% roots and up to 33% sprouts.
The findings show that eco and bio friendly products are not as good to the environment as thought they are. Some of them affect plants the same way the popular chemical ones do. More precise researches with smaller concentrations of washing liquid might show how much can the phytoremediation plants handle these highly recommended bio and eco friendly products.
