The use, production, processing and storage of petroleum products and gases generate hazardous atmospheres that can be ignited and generate explosions, causing serious damage both to materials and the environment, and especially to human health and integrity. The use of equipment in this environment requires compliance with certain well-defined parameters, which must be chosen in correlation with the potentially explosive atmosphere in which it is to be installed and the type of protection, temperature class and category of equipment.
In this sense, the article presents aspects related to the classification of potentially explosive areas, equipment, types of protection and temperature classes, as well as the interdependence and selection criteria for the purpose of avoiding ignition of the atmospheres in which they operate.
