Abstract

This paper presents the results of magnetic separation tests for the recovery of colemanite from the ore and the tailings produced in Kestelek (Turkey) Processing Plant. Crushed ore (30.76\% B2O3) and tailings (31.76\% B2O3) samples were wet screened and classified into different size fractions. Size fractions coarser than 75 $\mu$m were subjected to three-stage magnetic separation using a high intensity permanent magnetic separator. The mineralogical composition of the ore and the tailings appears to enable gangue minerals to be removed by magnetic separation. Under the test conditions a final colemanite concentrate with a cumulative grade of 41.29\% B2O3 were produced from the ore at a recovery of 96.76\% B2O3. The results also showed that colemanite reported to the tailings during the processing of the ore could be recovered into a concentrate having a cumulative B2O3 content of 43.73\% corresponding to a B2O3 recovery of 95.08\%. The concentrates produced from the ore and the tailings appear to be of sufficient grade to be marketed.
