Abstract

The aim of this paper is to study the physical properties of soils as key factors in favoring pluvial denudation and the spatial distribution of degraded areas through hydric erosion. The soil types from the degraded areas and the soils physical properties that influence the erodibility were analised in the south-western part of the Seca?e Plateau (Romania). Field geomorphologic and pedological observations and laboratory physical analyzes of soil samples (texture, permeability, porosity and degree of compaction) were performed, according to the romanian standards of National Institute of Pedological and Agrochemical Research (ICPA). Our research reveals the presence of the following types of soils: erodosols, regosols, preluvosols, faeozems, chernozems and aluviosols and complexes of soils formed by association of these types of soils. The upper horizon texture is medium (silty, silty-loamy, silty-sandy and sandy-clayey) and fine (clayey, clayey-loamy and clayey-sandy). The soils have a poorly structured upper horizon, and the lower horizons of the profile are unstructured. The large share of the sand (25 - 60%) and silt fraction (15 ? 32%) and the poorly developed structure are factors that increase soil susceptibility to erosion. High clay content (21 ? 59 %) and mechanical action by land use lead to soils compaction and crusting an to the intensification of hydric erosion processes on slopes. This study provides a better knowledge of the soil conditions at regional level and points out the importance of physical properties of soils as passive, but key factors in the water erosion process. Knowledge of these conditions is particularly important and necessary for proper land use and for sustainable land management and territorial planning.
