RECENT CLIMATE VARIABILITY OF SNOW COVER AND SNOW PRECIPITATION IN STRANDZHA REGION

Abstract

Spatial distribution and temporal variations of snow cover and snow precipitations carry important information about available water resources, snow load estimations, the plant vegetation period, habitat change and etc., which is crucial for many environmental, ecological, hydrological and technical issues. This study is focused on the tendencies in the regime of the snowfalls and the snow cover in Strandzha region during the period 1961-2017. The monthly values about number of days with snow cover and snow precipitation; maximum snow cover; precipitation sums and precipitation sums only from snow is calculated, using the information from all meteorological stations in region with continuous measurements during the whole period of investigation. Statistical analysis is performed in order to assess the variability and possible differences in the days with snow parameters from long-term data series. The results for the last 27 years (1991 ? 2017) are compared with the referent 30 years period (1961-1990). For whole region an increasing tendency in the number of days with snow cover is observed, while at the same time the measured maximum of snow depth during the 57 years of investigation shows a decreasing statistically insignificant trend.
