GIS APPLICATIONS IN OIL \& GAS INDUSTRY - OMV PETROM ROMANIA

Abstract

OMV Petrom S.A. is the largest integrated oil and gas company in Romania, having Exploration and Production activities (onshore and offshore) in Romania as well as in Kazakhstan and Russia. In 2004 Petrom S.A. became part of the OMV Group, the largest oil and gas producer in Central - Eastern Europe. To find, develop and operate new production, an oil and gas company must understand needed infrastructure, business conditions and environmental factors within a given geographic framework. The OMV Petrom GIS group’s duty of managing large and complex data sets, all related to spatial information, is essential for fast and safe implementation of new business projects. It is proved that using GIS in an oil and gas company is adding substantial value to e.g. project management. The so called E\&P WebGIS was implemented for the company wide use of GIS data, developed by SynerGIS Informationssysteme GmbH, ESRI’s distributor in Austria. The system allows user access, within the Intranet of OMV Petrom, for onshore and offshore projects, to visualize, search and generate reports \& maps, via this application from the central Geodatabase, which is updated permanently. The E\&P WebGIS application was also integrated with OMV Petrom’s standard electronic document management system (eDMS). The paper presents which are the main steps taken for the implementation of the GIS system within OMV Petrom, as well as the dedicated workflows and GIS community of users.
