NEOGENE CYCLO-STRATIGRAPHIC CHART OF THE CENTRAL PARATETHYS

Abstract

An analysis of the stratigraphic positions of the Neogene coal facies in Romania and in the countries around lead to a first cyclo-stratigraphic coherent scheme for the Neogene in the Central Paratethys (?icleanu et al., 2001). This was based upon the warm and cold phases of a climatic cycle with 4.1 ma period highlighted by us since 1998 (Prague), named ?Valach climatic cycle? at that time. This scheme was also based on absolute geological ages of the Neogene important limits: Paleogene-Neogene (23.8 ma), Miocene-Pliocene (5.33 ma) and Pliocene-Quaternary (1.8 ma). This scheme considered also the position of the late warm phase of the Valach climatic cycle which caused the Pliocene coal facies of the Paratethys in relation to the Dacian and Romanian stages. This positioning then allowed placing in time the older Neogene warm phases corresponding to positions of coal facies for the whole Neogene in the Paratethys: Uppermost Chattian-Lower Aquitanian, Middle Burdigalian, Middle Badenian, Middle Pontian.We mention that for the Lower Neogene we used the universal stages of the Lower Miocene with their limits as absolute geological ages given by the international stratigraphic charts. It results that the approximation for this local scheme lies only between the upper limit of the Burdigalian and the Miocene-Pliocene limit. An important step forward can be done taking into consideration the possible cause of the Valach climatic cycle: the plausible pulsation of the Solar System. In this case the temporal middle of the warm and cold phases may correspond to tectonic phases due to sudden sense shiftings of pulsation. Considering as reference the Rhodanian phase at the Miocene-Pliocene boundary (~5.33 ma), clearly manifested within a cold phase, the 2.05 ma duration of the Valach climatic cycle phases and also the time position of the Paleogene-Miocene boundary, we can clearly place in time both the phases of this cycle and the tectonic phases (genetically associated), starting from the Oligocene-Miocene boundary diastrophism. Finally we obtain not only a good cyclo-stratigraphic chart for Neogene in the Paratethys, but also a basis for charts covering larger time intervals if we admit that Valach climatic cycle affected always the whole terrestrial globe. In addition, this chart makes possible very precise positioning in time of the tectonic phases essentially associated to Valach climatic cycle, correlated with kinetic evolution of the Solar System.
