Abstract

Good information is crucial for effective working and decision making in all fields of human activity. It is widely thought that up to 80 % of information we get every day is related to a particular place on earth. With respect to this fact it is clear that spatial relations cannot be omitted in any case of planning and decision making. Hence teaching of thinking spatially and in wide relations has become an essential skill of graduates. This paper is to propose a teaching synergy in education where strategic decision making and the importance of spatial knowledge and analytical thinking is stressed out. Students are often educated in quantitative methods in decision making; they get familiar with different kinds of multiple attribute decision making methods (MADM), i. e. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), Technique for the Order of Prioritization by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) or WSA (Weighted Sum Approach) etc. for localization tasks. Interdisciplinary approach presents an enhancement of the decision making process employing skills and knowledge from other fields such as transport geography, transport systems and geographic information system in order to get a better spatial analysis and get overall review. In the final part of the paper there is an example of using AHP method in combination with transport accessibility analysis and transport system modelling, which is done in a specially utilised laboratory. Then geographic information system (GIS) tools are used for a number of tasks ranging from visualisation and map making to complex analysis and spatial statistics which is able to reveal more spatial correlation. Information from these analyses is then used in weight estimating and finding the optimal solution.
