Abstract

Factors that influence the geomechanical char acteristics of rocks can be of different nature, being divided into two broad categories of external factors and internal factors. Internal factors influencing the geomechanical characteristics of the rocks are the geological, physical and chemical. From the geological point of view, the main characteristics that influence the behavior of rocks are: mineralogical composition, structure and texture. From Physical and ch emical point of view rocks are directly influenced by bulk density, porosity, humidity and degree of alteration of mineral components. To this end, the Geomechanics Laboratory from University of Petrosani were performed several sets of tests for different characteristics of rocks. Under the influence of mechanical loads, resistance varies greatly even within the same type of rock. Humidity is a decisive factor on the geomechanical behavior of rocks, with an increase of their compactness, artificially inflating values and physical characteristics of an adverse effect on the elastic and mech anical characteristics. In this context, it should be taken into account the degree of alteration and fracturing of rocks. An increase in the number and size of cracks on the one hand leads to a weakening of the mechanical characteristics, and on the other hand can increase their lead when humidity is higher.
