ANALYSIS OF THE EXTREME EVENTS REPORTED IN THE PROXIMITY OF THE ROMANIAN HARBOUR AREAS

Abstract

From the perspective of the global climate changes, the aim of this paper is to analyse the extreme events that have taken place near the Romanian harbors in the last 30 years. In order to identify these extreme events, the hindcast data simulated by a wave modelling system implemented in the Black Sea will be used. The main wave parameters simulated by a wave prediction system implemented over the entire basin of the Black Sea are evaluated together with the wind fields considering the data provided by the US National Centers for Environmental Prediction, Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (NCEP-CFSR). Through a statistical processing, the representative parameters of the extreme weather events will be evaluated in order to achieve a forecast by identifying a pattern of repetitiveness or intensification of the values of these parameters that manifest themselves within a limited geographical limit over a known period of time. Four different areas were targeted in this work: Port of Constanta, Port of Mangalia, Port of Midia and Port of Sulina (the entrance in the Sulina arm of the Danube River). Most the economic activities developed in the harbor areas are directly dependent of the navigation conditions. From this perspective, the main objective of this work is to increase the safety operations in the harbor areas, especially by a better understanding of the most relevant patterns of the environmental matrix in the vicinity of the main Romanian harbors at the Black Sea.
