THERMOELECTRIC GENERATORS AS SOURCE OF PRODUCTS INNOVATIONS

Abstract

Paper analyses the principles and industrial applications of thermoelectric generators and energy harvesting devices in their almost 200-year history, e.g. from first documented application in 1840 till the current applications focusing on thermoelectric generators using waste heat from fireplace furnaces. Moreover, the energy harvesting devices as low power applications are involved in the paper. Applying the thermoelectric generators into existing products gives the managers an ability to innovate, be unique and develop the products and thus gain competitive success. A need to develop and implement new innovative products and services generate new ideas with implementation into products and processes. The main challenge today is how to be innovative. Innovation is a necessity for all industries today. Thermoelectric conversion of waste heat into electricity is considered a promising technology to increase the efficiency of existing energy processes, save non-renewable energy sources and reduce harmful emissions. The reasons given for the application of thermoelectric generators combine the basic needs of the present time contributing to saving the planet. This should draw our attention to the development of their applications. As an example of that is product innovation in a company producing the fireplaces inserts. Paper provides the application of thermoelectric generators in fireplace insert as a source of electric energy in areas without access to the public electric grid.
