THE GEO-MECHANICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF GRANITOIDES FROM THE SOUTH-EST VALCAN MOUNTAINS
Abstract
The widespread use of various types of ro cks in construction, construction materials industry and in raw material production implicitly requires a detailed knowledge of their geo-mechanical characteristics. The use of ro cks in the execution of various works is only allowed if they fall within certain quality criteria. With in this context, in the Geo- Mechanics Laboratory from the University of Petro Еџani, a complete assessment of the geo-mechanical properties of rocks from S outhern VГўlcan Massif was carried out. The main goal of the laboratory tests was to esta blish if the rocks originating from this geological area are adequate to be used in construction developments. In order to attain this aim, the determined ch aracteristics were compared to the limits imposed by the national standards which are presently in force in Romania. The paper summarizes the results obtained through the assessment of geo mechanical characteristics of magmatic rock samples collected from the Southern VГўlcan, namely from Porceni and Meri quarries. For rocks to be used in construction, it is necessary that they satisfy certain quality conditions. The paper basically deals with the physical, mechanical, technological properties of the dry rocks, saturated ones and those subjected to 25-50 cycles of freeze-thaw. Relevant coefficients were determined by soaking, gelivity and the values obtained were compared with those required by standards. The values obtained for the geo mechanical characteri stics of rocks were compared with the conditions of admissibility imposed by standards.
