Abstract

With the development of GNSS, one can easily obtain gravity disturbances at almost every point on the Earth’s surface. Thus, the use of gravity disturbance in geoid modeling becomes more appropriate than the use of gravity anomalies that require leveling in the points. For this reason, here is presented the basic theory for the application of radial basis functions for geoid heights modeling and in particular a Hotine-Koch scaling function for calculation with gravity disturbance. The report aims to test the approximation capabilities of the Hotine-Koch kernel function for a defined local zone. Calculations were performed in a local area with dimensions 2x4 degrees, located in the following bounds: 43 to 45 degrees in latitude and 23 to 27 degrees in longitude. 1225 values of gravity disturbance obtained from EGM2008 were used for the calculation of the RBF coefficients. The long waves of the gravitational field are removed from the initial measurements up to degree n = 360. The introduced frequency characteristic of Hotine-Koch for local zone is analyzed, and calculations are performed with and without its use in geoid heights approximation. The results of the experiment prove the good approximation possibilities of the Hotin?-Koch scaling function with gravity disturbance values as initial data. The obtained results show significant improvement in the accuracy using the frequency characteristic, as the obtained standard deviation is 0.007 m. Approximation without using a frequency characteristic shows the influence of external zones and is not recommended for geoid or quasigeoid heights calculation.
