ANALYSIS OF DEGRADED POST-MINING AREAS FOR RE-DEVELOPMENT - CASE STUDY

Abstract

Degraded post-mining areas have considerable potential for redevelopment. They are usually located in attractive urban areas and have convenient road and rail links to the rest of the city and other places in the region or country. These areas are often equipped with power, water and sewage systems. The redevelopment of these sites could take place in many different directions. They can be used to carry out production, service, commercial, residential and leisure activities. However, the unstabilized legal situation, lack of information on the area, its infrastructure and key features make investors prefer undeveloped land. On the other hand, the post-mining areas are still unused. The following paper is an attempt to perform a preliminary analysis of a selected post-mining site, in order to facilitate the choice of how to re-use it. This article provides basic information characterizing the area, its size, location, availability, contamination, accessibility of roads and railways, proposition of direction of development. The area of the fen, created after the collapse of the area in Po?omia was selected. This is an eloquent example of one of the visible effects of underground mining.
