Abstract

The growth course properties of grey alder (Alnus incana (L.) Moench) on different site types are still insufficiently researched, especially, if to compare the forest and abandoned agricultural lands. Due to the species relatively high prevalence in private forest areas in Latvia, which according to the forestry statistics data, equaled 11% in 2023, it has crucial significance to the economy. The paper analyses 40-year-old grey alder stands on abandoned agricultural land, forest land, and forests along the rivers. A total count of 44 circular sample plots, with the area 200 m were established. Diameter and height were measured for all Ist floor trees. Wood samples were taken for the year-ring measurements and soil samples were taken from each genetic horizon at depth until 40 cm, for soil analysis. Such soil parameters as organic content of the soil, as well as, soil reaction - pH in H2O and KCl extracts, content of CaCO3, soil texture, gleyic properties, the soil type according to Latvian and World Reference Base were estimated. When analyzing the soil physically-chemical properties in relation to the dendrometric indices of the stand (stand volume, number of trees and average tree diameter), a close correlation was found with CaCO3, organic matter content and soil pH index. The values of dendrometric indices of the stand are statistically significantly (p less than 0.05) higher at higher values of these soil parameters. In the studied grey alder stands on forest and agricultural lands, the dendrometric indices of the stands do not differ statistically significantly, but the differences in increment values of these indices are statistically significant. Increment values are significantly higher in grey alder stands on agricultural lands (p less than 0.05).
