RADIOECOLOGICAL MONITORING AROUND THE WORKING AREAS ON THE SITES WITH URANIUM INDUSTRY, REHABILITATED BY PHARE PROGRAM
Abstract
In accordance with Tender conditions of Phare Project BG 9904-03-01-01 “Supervision for Closing of the Uranium Mines at Eleshnitza and Dospat” and Inception Report the Radiation Protection Program of the Supervisor are foreseen planning and carrying out of preliminary radioecological monitoring (“zero” monitoring). The goal of this monitoring is receiving of information before the starting of the project for comparison of the effect of improving after the realization of the planed activities. Around the two sites (the tailing pond at hydrometallurgical plant “Zvezda”Eleshnitza and the quarry to mine “Dospat” in Barutin) are chosen characteristic stations for taking of waters, soils, and airs samples with aim to be define the carry out of natural radionuclides and the real damage influence under the biosphere in generally and the population in particularly. Some of these stations coincide with points of the monitoring network of “Ecoengineering – RM” Ltd. and with points of uranium industry before its closing. In the report are discussed the results of radiatiometric and dosimetric measurements at place, as well as the information for radiation-chemical and chemical analyzes of the samples of the environment. The analyze of the results showed that the influence of the tailing pond under the population of the village is insignificant. The increased contents of natural radionuclides in Zlataritza River are results of the executed mine works in the past. The polluted drainage waters under the tailing pond are not treated yet, but they do not pass through the village, they are dissolved in Mesta River and with the construction of the Waste Water treatment plant theirs negative influence will be eliminated. The polluted with uranium and radium waters in the gully under the quarry are not depended from realization of the project, they are consequence from the uranium ore extraction by underground away and carried out technological tests and hydro-metallurgical extraction of uranium from the horizons situated at levels under the level of the depo. The report makes an estimation of the system for radiatioecological monitoring, and it indicate that the system executes its goals and at the present moment there is no necessity of correction of the volume of the monitoring, the frequently and the places of samples taking.
