TECHNOGENIC LOAD ON GROUNDWATER IN ST. PETERSBURG

Abstract

Underground waters in St. Petersburg are strategic reserve of drinking water. Dense urban development, motor transport and industrial enterprises directly affect the quality of groundwater. In addition, groundwater can also carry pollutants into the Gulf of Finland. The main purpose of this article was to assess the state of groundwater in the coastal part of St. Petersburg. The study was based on the processing of laboratory analyzes primary results of water samples collected in the framework of state monitoring of groundwater in 2006-2014. A complete chemical analysis of groundwater of quaternary aquifers with the definition of heavy metals, microcomponents, oil products, and surfactants was carried out according to the Russian sanitary standards. The results were statistically processed to obtain the mean annual, average annual, maximum and minimum values. As a result of the analysis of the data, the average chemical composition of groundwater in the territory of St. Petersburg was specified. An area contamination of groundwater by oil products was revealed, as well as local contamination with heavy metals, aluminum and iron. Over the past 10 years, the level of groundwater pollution has not only declined, but also increased sharply compared to the situation at the beginning of the century. Despite high groundwater contamination is largely leveled by the surface runoff of the Neva River, some of the pollution get in the Gulf of Finland directly undiluted and can have a direct adverse effect on the biota on a local level.
