THE CHILE EARTHQUAKE OF FEBRUARY 27, 2010: THE CASE OF THE REHABILITATION AT THE UNIVERSIDAD DE CONCEPCION
Abstract
Although the buildings of the Universidad de Concepcion (UdeC) stood up well structurally to the effects of the 8.8 magnitude earthquake on 27 February 2010 in Concepcion, Chile, diverse damage was generated in their non-structural elements. Due to the large number of university buildings (over 100 on the Concepcion Campus alone) and the need to start classes on 5 April, numerous simultaneous repair projects were generated. These were done within the national post-earthquake context, UdeC culture and timing. The objective of the present article is to determine the applicability of Project Management in the particular case of the UdeC infrastructure rehabilitation projects, following the natural disaster. Project Management was found to be necessary in order to achieve the objectives of the projects in the timing required for the UdeC operation.
