Abstract

From a structural optimization point of view, the design of steel lattice towers begins with choosing from various alternatives to develop the geometry of the incorporated trusses. The biggest challenge is to find optimal geometry based on experience. In contrast to some structures that are generally intuitive to construct, (e.g. common buildings structures), the same design for the tower structures is frequently built for several times. Thus, cost savings and performance improvements obtained by structural optimization procedures may get a large impact upon the engineering project. The overall objectives of this paper are to produce optimized conceptual layouts of the tubular truss structures through computational software and deliver an easy to assembly topology. The paper focuses on generation of low-cost steel triangular lattice transmission line towers by a simple shape optimization method that can be used by designers in the common engineering practice. Static wind loading will be employed in developing designs of lattice towers. In the proposed procedure, the inclination angle between braces or the larger chord distance is optimized and the member dimensions of the lower part of the tower (sections) are sough in order to minimize the material consumption while still meeting the design requirements.
