Abstract

The state of Sarawak, situated on northern part of the Borneo Island, is the part of Malaysia Federation. Main raw materials usable for the Sarawak economy are oil, wood, and natural gas. Nowadays the importance of brown coal as a raw material is caused by the growing needs of power in the Sarawak. It is the reason of working trip of authors of this article to the area of Merit Pila. They worked there as Deputy Mine Managers in 2006 and 2007. Merit Pila is great coal basin situated in central Sarawak. The paper briefly summarises the geological, stratigraphic, mineralogical and structural situation of the basin and situation of coal mining in this area. The main attention is devoted to small open pit mine Beradai West, which is very well known locality of amber. The parameters of this type of amber are described in this paper. The main attention is devoted to situation of Merit Pila coal basin in this paper, because authors spent there 3 months. The greatest coal basin of the state of Sarawak is the basin Mukah. The basin is situated in western Sarawak, near the cost of the South China Sea. The paper briefly summarises the history of survey works and topographical, geological, stratigraphic and structural situation of coal basin. Parameters of main types of overburden rocks and parameters of coal matter of main and minor seams are described in this paper too. Authors had no possibility to visit the Mukah coal basin and this part of the paper is only based on the study of Malaysian literature. Authors hope that this paper will be interesting for European geologists as a first information about the Merit Pila locality and the Mukah locality.
