Abstract

The article discusses the geological structure of the Middle Devonian dolomites deposit located in the south-eastern part of Poland, in the Holly Cross Mountains, in the central part of the kielecko-lagowskie synclinorium. The deposit is cut by large, four-level open pit mine. It contributes to follow tracking the variability of the formation of Devonian sediments to a large extent. Within the deposit, the lithological diversity of the dolomitic series and the intensity of tectonic phenomena are observed. In terms of structural and texture features carbonate rocks are very diversed. In the undisturbed tectonically areas occur gray, gray-brown, massive and compact dolomites. Within fault zones predominate strongly cracked and brecciation dolomites with numerous dolomite-calcite veins, often also with mineralization symptoms of iron sulphides, hematite, illite and dolomite-ankerite. Part of the deposit located in the north-western side was selected to study, within fault zone crossing all open pit levels. The vertical range of the zone exceeds 50 meters and horizontal range is about 15 meters. Basic macroscopic descriptions, microscopic analysis in transmitted light and Knoop hardness (KH) were performed. The conducted tests confirmed and detailed the results of the macroscopic observations. Analysis have proved, that rocks located close to fault zone are characterized by both diversed and at the same time lower microhardness values than in the undisturbed parts of deposit. It is as results from the different intensification of the hydrothermal, weathering and secondary mineralization processes. Despite this fact, significant part of the mineral resources can be used as a raw mineral.
