REDUCTION OF POLYMERIC WASTE BY APPLYING HEAT TREATMENTS DURING THE POLYMERIZATION PERIOD
Abstract
Pollution and its effects on the environment have been at the centre of debates on the global stage, with growing concerns from researchers and the public. A major source of pollution is polymeric materials, which are increasingly used in various industries because of their similar properties to metal. If, in the case of polymeric thermoplastics materials we have recycling and reusing technologies when they reach the end of their lifespan or they break, not the same can be said about polymeric thermosetting materials. Due to their proprieties, we have not yet found reliable ways of recycling. Currently, the only viable way which excludes dumping is to find and reuse them as exchange parts. Thus, we need to find ways to increase the lifespan of components made of thermosetting polymers. This paper showcases fatigue tests to determine the lifespan of two sample of circular section, made of epoxy polymeric resins Epiphen RE4020 and hardener DE 4020. A sample is casted in matrix and allowed to polymerize naturally at room temperature, while the other sample is thermally treated during the polymerization process.
