Abstract

In recent decades, Polish suburban areas have undergone rapid demographic and spatial transformation. This expansion is primarily fueled by enhanced transportation accessibility and a highly dynamic real estate market, leading to intensive suburbanization processes. However, this rapid growth often outpaces planning oversight. A critical challenge has been the lack of comprehensive spatial data, particularly regarding the scale and impact of decisions on building and land development conditions. As a result, the need for integrated spatial information systems has become increasingly urgent to monitor and manage this transition. This study aims to assess the utility of recently introduces urban registers as a tool for promoting sustainable land use development. By analyzing digital data systems, the research explores how these registers can provide the transparency and oversight necessary to mitigate urban sprawl. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining spatial analysis (GIS) of suburban land-use patterns with an assessment of data from urban registers. Furthermore, a comparative case study analysis of selected Polish municipalities is conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of digital spatial information systems in mitigating urban sprawl.
