A SOLUTION FOR EFFICIENT MANAGEMENT OF GIS DATA IN URBAN PLANNING
Abstract
The main characteristics of geographic information systems (GIS) are large geospatial datasets and the necessity to share data among other GIS systems. In order to achieve this kind of interoperability it is necessary that the data is st ructured, encoded and described in standardized way and that the GIS architecture is based on standards. Standards in this field are based on the se rvice-oriented architect ure, where different types of tasks are implemented by different services. All these ta sks in collaboration produce the final result. Those standards include ISO 19100 series of standards which define structure and encoding of geospatial data and metadata and OpenGIS standards which standardize interfaces and protocols for the communication of different services. This paper addresses problems related to the production of maps during the process of spatial planning which are cau sed using traditional, monolith ic architecture of GIS and proposes the way to overcome such problems by moving to the standardized service oriented architecture. This is achieved by using the ERDAS Apollo software package that implements mentioned st andards and provides interope rability. Data used for the case study cover the area of two municipa lities in Autonomous Province of Vojvodina in Serbia: Senta and KanjiЕѕa for which three different types of maps are developed: Map of land use, Map of infrastructure systems and Map of natural resources and protection of cultural heritage and environment. The main benefit of such architecture is the centralized approach in the data management during the process of creation of referral maps of the spatial plans. At the same time users do not have to change tools they are accustomed to use in their everyday wo rk and to learn new skills, since common interfaces allow binding of various tools without unnecessary conversions of data.
