Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to highlight the actual state of energy production and consumption in Romania and to emphasize where there is potential for either reducing the greenhouse gas emissions by using more efficient heating and cooling systems for buildings or reducing the greenhouse gas emissions by using less fossil fuels and more renewable energy sources that can be tapped in Romania. In Romania despite a good thermal insulation degree for newly constructed buildings in the past 5-10 years there is still a huge potential for reducing the energy consumption for buildings mainly because more than half of the old existing buildings are not thermal insulated at this very moment. Other methods for reducing the energy consumption for buildings that have potential are represented by the use of heat pumps and solar panels and other efficient systems like double skin fa?ades, passive cooling or thermal activated building systems. Thus there is untapped potential where energy consumption is regarded but there is room for improvement when energy production plants comes into consideration. In Romania approximate 26% of the electrical energy produced comes from hydropower plants, 2% solar power plants, 0,4% wind power plants and the rest is produced by fossil or nuclear fuels plants. Taking into consideration what is widely known this study will put into perspective the potential of Romania in the grand scheme of global climate change and the main obstacles that exists now on the road to an environmental responsible country.
