Abstract

Reducing gas emissions which affects the Earth's climate system is an important goal of vehicle operation. In order to achieve this objective, the operation of motor vehicles and their component systems must be carried out under the most efficient conditions. The maximum efficiency can be achieved by knowing in detail the technical state of the vehicles, and depending on the diagnosis defects by performing maintenance activities in order to maintain the technical state at an appropriate level. The aim of this paper is to analyze the influence of the malfunctions on the fuel consumption by using the diagnostic unit (software and hardware) BOSCH KTS ESITRONIC 2.0. The implementation of microprocessor-controlled systems on vehicles has enabled the development of an electronic engine control system, with an increase in the number of tracked targets and the number of recorded and analyzed parameters. Sensor information arrives at the Engine Control Module (ECM), which establishes, depending on these, operating and adjustment parameters (idling speed, ignition timing, fuel injected, amount of air absorbed, air and fuel mixture, exhaust gas recirculation control and detonation control). The resulted data show that some false information arrived at the ECM, due to faulty sensors, but values in the allowed range (compared to the stored reference values) cannot be detected by the On Board Diagnostic System. Such failures do not correspond to the state of the engine, but are plausible for the control unit and can lead to the operation of the high-fueling engine, which generates increased exhaust gas emissions.
