Abstract

Studies of bottom sediments in the Crimean Peninsula coastal regions are highly essential because these sediments are under heavy pressures of maritime activities, but their good ecological state is highly important due to resort attractiveness of this region. Correlation between physical and chemical characteristics of sediments makes it possible to determine sedimentation conditions and anthropogenic impacts. Samples have been taken from the surface layer of bottom sediments in the coastal regions of Crimea in 2018. The results have revealed that pelite-aleuritic sediments with inclusions of sand and individual shells predominate at the Crimean shelf. An increased content of sand and gravel material has been found in the area of the Kerch Strait (the eastern part of Crimea) and near Cape Tarkhankut (the most western cape of Crimea). The maximum concentrations of organic carbon (Corg, % dry wt.) are typically observed for samples with an increased content of silt. The carbonate content (CaCO3, % dry wt.) varies from 5.27% in the Feodosia Gulf to 80.07% in the Kerch Strait. The obtained correlations between the content of individual grain size fractions in the bottom sediments and their chemical characteristics has made it possible to evaluate organic matter accumulation. The analysis has revealed a tendency of accumulation of silt material in the coastal regions of Crimea. Taking into account adsorption properties of the finely dispersed fraction, this results in organic matter accumulation especially under anthropogenic pressure.
