Abstract

Geoinformation systems are widely used in many different areas of the humanities. Such systems allow to analyze, visualize historical geospatial information and what is more to support historical research processes in various situations. However an objective lack of the specialized GIS-analysis tools intended for historic, ethnographic and other research is tangible. Chronological tracking gives an example of the analysis tool aimed at solving a wide class of historic problems. The development of a geochronological track of an historic individual or an historic object based upon the interpretation of the (his, its) biographic information can be represented as a graph connecting geographic points of the historical personalityпїЅs whereabouts; nodes of the graph are marked with the color corresponding to some parameters of the individual or historic events. This paper proposes a GIS-based approach that integrates chronological and geospatial data in the form of a geochronology track. The paper covers the main advantages (possibilities) and disadvantages of the proposed GIS-based analysis tool. In this paper we also show how to use GIS in historical and ethnographic research, outline the challenges we see in bringing the technology to the next level, and propose some starting points for the future research.
