Abstract

Over 30% of the Bulgarian Black Sea shoreline is characterized as a depositional type of coast. A significant portion of it represents well-formed sandy beaches and dune fields, falling under the protection of the European ecological network NATURA 2000. The coastal sector of the Lower Kamchia Depression hosts the longest beach-dune system on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast called Kamchia-Shkorpilovtsi beach. The main task of the project "Mapping and monitoring of depositional areas along the Northern Bulgarian Black Sea coast using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles" is to compile an integrated geodatabase by geodetic measurements, seasonal monitoring remote sensing, and field reconnaissance surveys. The lack of shore protection facilities and the weak anthropogenic pressure on the beach is an excellent opportunity for high-resolution mapping of the natural beach and dune landforms. For the first time, based on high-resolution data from UAV, an analysis of the erosion-accumulative processes and the change of the shoreline between Cape Paletsa and Cape Karaburun was made. Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) was used for estimating short-term and long-term rates of shoreline changes (erosion or accretion). For the time period of 1983-2021, using the Linear Regression Rate (LRR) indicator, an average accretion rate of +0.05 m/y was reported for Kamchia-Shkorpilovtsi beach. From a geological and biological scientific point of view, the morphological changes around the mouths of the Kamchia and Fandakliyska rivers and their influence on the brackish ichthyofauna are of interest. By a combination of data from a drone and a single-beam echo sounder, an integrated surface model of the Fandakliyska River estuary was generated, which allowed a quantitative assessment of the morphological changes after the winter hydrological phenomena in the period November 2020 - May 2021. The main goal of the paper is to present a multidisciplinary approach to the study of highly dynamic coastal landforms, the results of which would benefit local authorities in drawing up management plans for the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.
