Abstract

The presence of flammable and/or combustible substances in various industrial production processes generates in most cases potentially explosive atmospheres, which transforms a regular work environment into an explosion risk area, directly influencing the way in which equipment intended to be used in these areas is designed, installed and maintained. In areas where potentially explosive atmospheres may form due to the presence of flammable and/or combustible substances, technical equipment must be used whose casing prevents water and dust from entering. This is embodied in the term normal degree of protection. Depending on the intended use of the technical equipment and the laboratory tests applied to this equipment, the normal degree of protection of the equipment in question is expressed by the international IP code, two characteristic digits, an optional letter and an additional letter.. Considering the requirements and provisions of the SR EN 60529:1995 standard, in order to determine and verify the protection against water penetration inside the casing of an equipment (normal protection degree IPX6 - protection against powerful jets of water from any direction), a high-performance test stand was developed and implemented within NRDI INSEMEX Petrosani. This paper presents the test stand through which the normal IPX6 degree of protection can be determined for technical equipment intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.
