THE FIRST ANNOTATED CHECKLIST OF THE MOLLUSCA OF THE BLACK SEA GEORGIAN COAST
Abstract
Mollusca constitute a significant phylum within the Black Sea ecosystem. This study provides the first comprehensive checklist of the phylum Mollusca along the Black Sea Georgian coast. It is based on a collection and synthesis of data from various published sources and unpublished records. The checklist draws on material collected across diverse biotopes at depths ranging from 3 to 205 meters, over a period spanning from 1926 to 2023. These collections were conducted as part of various projects and national monitoring programs organized by the NEA Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Biodiversity (former Marine ecology and Fisheries research Institute). Through a compilation of available references, a total of 79 species of Mollusca have been identified. This checklist highlights the diversity of malacofauna distributed along the Black Sea Georgian region and serves as a valuable resource for future biodiversity studies in the area.
