Abstract

The concept of circular economy (CE) is a fundamental change in the way we perceive and manage resources, production, and consumption. The transition to a circular economy is a major challenge at international level, considering the context of limited natural resources and the growth of the global population. As the consumption of resources continues to increase, it is essential to find ways to manage raw materials more efficiently and to reduce the anthropic impact on the environment. In this context, the authors of this study present the way and fields of activity in which the transition to a circular economy in agriculture can be carried out using renewable resources, reducing waste, and recycling bio-waste and by-products. The paper is based on data sources from Eurostat, the National Institute of Statistics (NIS), as well as on the conclusions of research in the field carried out in Romania or other states of the European Union. The analyses carried out by the authors of this paper allowed them to come to the conclusion that an efficient approach to bio-waste or by-products from agriculture, not only will contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but will also support the transition to a circular economy - an economic model based on maximizing the use of resources and the reduction of wastes through re-use, re-cycling, and re-manufacturing. In this sense, policies that support the initiatives of circular economy and improve waste recycling and management practices are essential to reduce the consumption of materials and increase the productivity of resources. This approach not only supports the sustainability of the environment, but also contributes to the creation of valuable resources, thus promoting an efficient cycle of resources.
