DIFFICULTIES IN RELIABLE ESTIMATION OF ARSENIC RESOURCES IN THE CU-AG ORE DEPOSITS (THE FORE-SUDETIC MONOCLINE, POLAND)

Abstract

Based on the example of arsenic, co-occurring in the Cu-Ag deposits (the Fore-Sudetic Monocline, Poland) while considered to be harmful for the environment, the paper describes difficulties associated with the reliable estimation of trace and rare elements concentrating in parts of deposits. The characteristics of these elements that make the estimation of the resources difficult include: extremely high variability of content, the dominant share of random components in the differentiation structure, and the concept of an "island model" of occurrence of elevated contents in the Cu-Ag deposit. The sampling carried out during the experimental work, aimed at improving the density of the routine mine sampling in mine workings in order to estimate the content of Cu and Ag, has shown a high local variability of arsenic accumulation index, even in the case of adjacent samples. This may be a result of the nature of the ore mineralization, errors in the sampling procedure, and difficulties in assaying this element. The presented rules, if followed, increase the accuracy of estimation of the resources.
