CHARACTERIZATION OF MARBLE DEPOSITS IN VYSOCINA REGION, CZECH REPUBLIC, AS A TOOL FOR DETERMINING MATERIAL PROVENANCE

Abstract

Crystalline limestones - marbles, are historically one of the most important raw materials exploited in the area of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands (Vysocina region). Their use is connected with the first construction of masonry buildings since the Middle Ages. Local marbles were first used as raw material for lime burning, then as building stone, decorative stones or as individual elements in building constructions. The most famous locations where these marbles were used include the Cistercian monastery in -dar nad Sazavou, Pernstejn Castle or the church in Doubravn-k. The occurrence of marbles in Vysocina region is concentrated in about twenty sub-areas in which individual separate deposits are formed. The aim of the study is to map marble quarries in detail. The following instrumental techniques, such as microscopic observations, combined with mineralogical and petrological characterizations and stable carbon (13C) and oxygen (18O) isotope analysis, were used for this purpose. The knowledge about the provenance of marble parts of historical buildings like the above-mentioned Cistercian monastery or the church in Doubravn-k has been acquired. Moreover, it is expected that comprehensive analytical characterisation of marble deposits enables the gain of information about their state, including existing availability of marble for its future potential usage as raw materials used for restoration and conservation and/or using abandoned quarries as an attractive touristic and recreational destination.
