MANAGEMENT OF COMMUNAL WASTE IN POLAND

Abstract

The main aim of this article is to present the current situation of waste management in Poland. The most frequently used methods of waste treatment, with particular emphasis on the use of thermal methods. In recent years, the stream of municipal waste per capita is constantly increasing which makes the municipal waste management is becoming one of the biggest challenges in the twenty-first century. By 2016, most of the waste was not reused, but its way directly to the landfill. Legal restrictions introduced from 1 January 2016 prompted the need for significant changes in the way waste management (landfill ban for waste calorie above 6MJ / kg). In 2016 in Poland exploitation of six biggest communal thermal recycling facilities has already begun. Therefore Poland has joined countries of "old" European Union where technologies of thermal processing / recycling of communal waste are successfully used and, in great degree, solve problems of waste management. At the same time increasing the share of municipal waste collected selectively for recycling. The work was presented the legal basis for waste management in Poland, the percentage of the various methods of municipal waste management in recent years and has outlined the prospect of waste management in the coming years as part of the National Waste Management Plan.
