THE IMPORTANCE OF DIGITALIZATION IN THE PROCESS OF SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to highlight the importance of digitalization in promoting sustainable economic development, focusing specifically on the contribution of digital technologies in the field of geosciences and climate analysis. By using a mixed methodology that combines documentary analysis with relevant case studies, the research explores how advanced digital solutions contribute to environmental monitoring and climate forecasting in the current context of confronting the accelerating phenomenon of climate change. The results obtained show that digital tools, such as geospatial information systems (GIS), IoT sensors, climate data analysis platforms and artificial intelligence, play an essential role in assessing the impact of climate change and supporting the transition to a green economy. Examples analyzed include the use of digital technologies in precision agriculture to reduce water and fertilizer consumption, in monitoring carbon emissions from industry, and in managing natural risks through predictive hazard models. The paper also highlights the benefits brought to public administration by digitizing decision-making processes in the field of environmental governance, as well as the role of these technologies in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular those related to climate action, responsible consumption and sustainable innovation. At the same time, challenges such as gaps in digital infrastructure between regions, high implementation costs and cybersecurity risks are identified. However, the research highlights the significant potential of digitalization to accelerate adaptation to climate change and support sustainable industrial and agricultural processes. The conclusions of the paper provide concrete directions for decision-makers in formulating integrated policies that leverage digital technologies in support of environmental sustainability and climate resilience.
