Abstract

The purpose of the study is the evaluation of the bioeconomic potential of Western Romania in terms of determining the main agricultural and forestry products and the amount of available organic waste and by-products that can be integrated into the circular bioeconomy. The NUTS 2 administrative region West Romania consists of four counties: Timi?, Arad, Cara?-Severin and Hunedoara, which in total have more than 1.8 million hectares (ha) of agricultural land and large forested areas- a significant but not well exploited biomass potential. The study focuses on the four counties and the data was obtained through national statistics and published research. The regional analysis of crop residues, animal waste products, and forestry by-products, we identify biomass resources that are not yet exploited and which could be used as renewable raw materials in the production of energy. The methodology is based on the combination of the statistical assessment and the comparative analysis to approximate the resources availability and conversion potential. Data generated in this work brings novelty for the scientific community by describing the viable routes towards improving local value chains and decreasing environmental burden with the help of circular bioeconomic approaches. The originality of this work lies in its regional focus and cross-sectorial integration of biomass sources. We consider that the synthetic assessment will raise awareness about West Romania region as an important actor in the European emerging circular bioeconomy.
