THE RISK OF INITIATING EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERES BY ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGES FROM MATERIALS AND TECHNICAL EQUIPMENT USED IN INSTALLATIONS WHERE HYDROGEN IS PRESENT
Abstract
Materials and technical equipment, especially their external parts, are inherently subjected to the electrification process during their use. The electrification process of the materials and external parts of the equipment, especially the non-conductive ones, is responsible for the generation, through specific mechanisms, of significant amounts of electrostatic charges. The electrostatic charges generated as a result of the electrification process on the materials and external parts of the technical equipment used in Ex., environments constitute a risk, namely of the occurrence of electrostatic discharges which in the presence of an explosive atmosphere can produce an explosion and/or fire. Consequently, the work aims to identify and establish the technical and organizational methods, respectively the essential safety and health requirements applicable to technical equipment and materials intended for use in environments with explosive atmospheres, the application of which allows the elimination of the risk of electrification and the occurrence of electrostatic discharges and consequently the reduction to an acceptable level of risk of explosion and/or fire.
