METAMODERNISM IN CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE AND ITS ASPECTS OF SUSTAINABILITY
Abstract
In recent years Metamodernism has turned into an ever more significant philosophical outline in art and culture. It is even more relevant in contemporary architecture. The current article proposes an overview upon the main features of Metamodernism in architecture. Based on a broad spectrum of examples built after 2000, it attempts to trace the ongoing changes in architectural language after the end of Post-Modernism. The study outlines the following characteristics of metamodern architecture: timelessness; generic form; reinforcement of materiality rather than color; combination of craftsmanship and technology; social engagement; individualization; oscillation between opposites; return to Romanticism; revived interest in beauty. After tracing the Metamodernist features of contemporary architecture, the study further reveals the aspects of sustainability in each of them. However, sustainability here is regarded not in its technical characteristics, but rather as design qualities that could ensure longevity of the buildings thanks to their architectural image.
